To fulfill Social and Fiscal Responsibility: Government submits 2026 Budget Bill to Congress
• This corresponds to the last Budget Bill presented by President Gabriel Boric’s administration, focusing on health, pensions, housing, caregiving, education, and the sound management of public finances.
The Minister of Finance, Nicolás Grau, and the Budget Director, Javiera Martínez Fariña, along with the Minister Secretary General of the Presidency, Macarena Lobos, presented the 2026 Budget Bill to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, José Miguel Castro. With this, the authorities formally submitted the document for legislative review, which will take place between October and November in both chambers of the National Congress.
The bill submitted responds to the needs of Chilean families and therefore focuses on fiscal consolidation and the protection of public finances. Additionally, it prioritizes health, pensions, housing, caregiving, and education, while also reinforcing public security efforts.
This corresponds to the last Budget Bill presented by President Gabriel Boric’s administration.
In this context, Minister Grau emphasized the importance of the bill’s submission to Congress, stating that it is “a Budget that, like all those we have submitted so far, successfully combines social with fiscal responsibility. In other words, it focuses on addressing the social urgencies and priorities in a responsible manner,” he said.
“That’s why we have also said that one of the pillars of this Budget is to ensure a fiscal trajectory that gradually moves us toward a more appropriate structural deficit and, at the same time, allows us to maintain a stable debt path. As we have done so far, this has resulted in the flattening of the debt curve,” he noted. “This government will be the one with the lowest debt growth since President Bachelet’s first administration. And this year in particular will be likely be year with the smallest debt increase in at least a decade,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Budget Director Javiera Martínez Fariña stated that “today we deliver to Congress the last Budget prepared under this administration—one that demonstrates that social and fiscal responsibility go hand in hand. This year we carried out an unprecedented resource reallocation exercise to more efficiently finance the priorities of our citizens, something we had already done in previous budgets. This additional fiscal space is also supported by new permanent revenues generated through the Mining Royalty and Tax Compliance laws, as well as by improved economic prospects. All of this while stabilizing public debt growth after 17 consecutive years of increases, through an extraordinary effort,” she explained.
At the same time, Minister Lobos noted that “this is the most important law of the Republic because it sets the priorities for the months ahead. As in previous years, this proposal addresses public safety, economic security, and social security. We hope all political sectors will act with generosity, because the needs of our citizens cannot be put on hold,” she said.
